Weekend Recap

Hope you all had a fabulous Labor Day Weekend! On Saturday I made it through my 15 miler!!! Woooo hoooo! It looks like my "strategy" for the marathon is going to have to involve "scheduled walking", which I am not totally thrilled about, but I pretty much knew I would need to, but was hoping that I wouldn't have to. What I did on Saturday was the following -
Run miles 1-6
Starting at 6 miles I walked for 2 minutes then ran 2 miles. That didn't seem like the "magic mix", so I switched to run 15 minutes walk 3 minutes. That was good for a little bit, then it switched to run 10 minutes walk 3 minutes, finally by the time I got to mile 12-13 it was pretty sporadic (run 1 song, walk half a song, run 2 songs, walk half a song), basically anything to keep going. It's my damn hips (how old am I???????). The rest of my body could just keep on going, but my freaking hips would like to quit! However, this week was NO WHERE near as bad as the weekend that I did the 13 miles, so I think I'm making progress. Overall my time wasn't bad, I ended up averaging 11:32/mile.
So, here's my question to all of you (especially those of you that are "newer" to the running thing), did you ever go through this, or were you just able to run the whole time? PLEASE share your stories!!! Any advice???
After the run we had a DELICIOUS breakfast waiting for us!!! Eggs and potatos, but totally gourmet!! From there I went home and showered, then did the ice bath, then napped. I met up with my parents for dinner at Joe's Crab Shack where I ate a TON of shrimp and crab legs!!! Then I hit up Coldstone Creamery....absolutely sinful!!
I woke up on Sunday morning to find myself mighty "puffy" from my salty feast the night before....not good! On top of that the stiffness was sinking in big time!!! I just hung out the rest of the day and did some shopping.
Today was pretty productive, I splurged on a cleaning lady to get me back on track (best money ever spent!), so while she was doing house stuff, I got caught up on laundry. From there I headed to the pool with my neighbors and their 4 daughters, they are too much fun!
Now I'm just waiting to put some chicken on the grill and hang out!
Hope you all enjoyed the weekend and have a great week!

Cold Stone, can never pass it up. Hope your hips start feeling better. Glad you are finding a combination that is working. Way to keep going forward.

awesome job on the 15 miler! sounds like a great weekend!

everyone is different and has their own methods... the 2 girls i did all my long runs with would run the first 13 or so miles, then do a walk/run thing for the rest. one ended up running the entire marathon though! so it just depends on what works best for you. glad you are figuring that out!

Did you say shopping - what did you buy? Hey what was the hot nail polish color all the cool girls are wearing? Cold stone is not my vice, Rita's is> Oh and Chipotle - chipotle is my favorite. PS the only time I have ever run is when deisel escaped and I had to chase him through the neighborhood. But it sounds like you are building up stronger and stronger. WTG

Great job on the 15 mi, glad it went better than the 13 you had.

When I first started running I created a workout so that I would slowly go up in miles and not have to walk. This year to help train for my first marathon I joined the Jeff Galloway running club where he has created the run walk run method. So my group will run 6 min walk 1 min run 6 min and so on. At first I thought "seriously? walk?" but as we'v gone on it's really helped.

As the miles get up there I really do feel stronger then I have in the past. I hear a lot of people will switch it up to 9 and 1 on a marathon day only because it's easier to keep track of. But come mile 20 you're passing people that passed you around mile 5 or 6 because they've been running the whole thing. Hope that helps.

No advice with the hip thing as my prob just seems to come and go as it pleases. I am doing some strengthening excercises that seem to be helping though. I will see if I can find something explaining them...

Shrimp and crab... sounds perfect right now!!

Oh and I agree, the cleaning lady is the best money ever spent!

I've probably told you this before, but my first marathon training I had the WORST hip issues. I had to see a PT and it still didn't really go away until I rested for a LONG time and do my stretches and all that.

The point of your long runs is to find what works best for you. I wasn't really a "run/walker" and neither was my first training partner (now I train solo). But we would usually walk when we did our shot blox - so 2 or 3 times during our run. Some people do the walk/run thing right from the beginning to help "save" thier legs. So just keep trying different combos and you'll find what works best.

BUT if you still have hip issues- go see a Physical Therapist. Seriously.

I would imagine that with 8 weeks left you should be able to incorporate the run walk run method. Again it does take some getting use to but it seems you’re a little opened minded about it then I was going into it.

You should be fine with doing the 6 min run 1 min walk series and keep a steady pace around 9-9:30 min miles. That’s what the group I run in does and we’re all working for a sub 4 hour marathon.

Hope it helps, good luck.

I didn't do the walk-run thing, but I built up pretty slowly when I first started running. I did an entire summer of running 1-2 miles at a time before I started doing longer.

Oh, but I do want to add that once I hit 5 miles running, it was really easy to add miles. That, to me, was the threshold.
